E-gates installed at Dubai play areas to lock out 'strangers' amid safety fears

Security measures have been increased at dozens of playgrounds and sports pitches across Dubai amid complaints about “strangers” misusing them.

Dubai Municipality installed e-gates at 33 spots to “enhance the safety and protection” of children.

The authority said it would issue smart cards to residents this month to allow them entry.

The venues were not disclosed by officials.

“It will enhance the safety and protection of children by not allowing the entry of strangers, and also help to protect the property and assets of the play areas from tampering by strangers,” said Manal bin Yaarouf, spokeswoman at the authority.

“The Municipality has provided the play areas with e-gates which will contribute to enhancing safety and privacy for the residents of the area.

“We are keen to provide the luxury of living for citizens and residents in the emirate and to make them happy.”

Families will be presented with three access cards, which open gates for nine seconds.

Ms bin Yaarouf said the measure was a response to complaints from residents about strangers entering facilities and damaging them.

“These play areas are one of the most important recreational places for children and young people and their families,” she said.

“They are considered significant in urban planning as they increase social ties between residents of neighbourhoods.”
