DUBAI // Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum enrolled for national service in the Armed Forces on Thursday.
“Enrolling for national service is a medal we wear on our chests and it is an honour before it is a duty,” Sheikh Ahmed said.
He is the son of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
The Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi, enlisted on October 25.
And the Crown Princes of Fujairah, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, and Umm Al Quwain, Sheikh Rashid bin Saud Al Mualla, enlisted on October 30 at Sharjah’s Rahmania Recruitment Centre.
All eligible Emiratis must perform national service regardless of their social status, said Sheikh Ahmed bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, chairman of the National and Reserve Service Authority.
The law covering national service sets the penalties for failing to report for national service at between a month and a year in jail, and fines of between Dh10,000 and Dh50,000.
Those who receive the penalties must still complete national service.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Tahnoon said registration was obligatory for all people of age, regardless of educational or professional status, or personal situation.
