Latest: Family of frontline medic who died of Covid-19 honoured by UAE leaders' praise
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, personally called the families of heroes who died while performing their duty on the frontline to contain the coronavirus pandemic.
Sheikh Mohamed expressed thanks and appreciation for the great role the fallen heroes played and the dedication they showed while working to combat the pandemic.
He said the Emirati community would never forget their sacrifices, state news agency Wam reported on Monday night.
"We are very proud of our heroes who lived with us and were part of our social fabric," Sheikh Mohamed said.
"They worked hard to protect our health and to ensure our safety during difficult times."
He said the people of the UAE looked up to them as role models and valued their sacrifice.
"The UAE will never forget the sacrifices made by Dr Sudhir Rambhau Washimkar, nurse Lezly Orine Ocampo, Anvar Ali, Ahmed Al Sebaei, Dr Bassam Bernieh and other heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect our loved ones," Sheikh Mohamed said.
"The families of the heroes of humanity are part of our society and the UAE will always support and stand by them."
The families expressed their appreciation to Sheikh Mohamed for calling them, Wam said.
On Monday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, attended a Commemoration Day ceremony at Wahat Al Karama in Abu Dhabi.
During the evening event, Sheikh Mohammed paid tribute to those who died in service of their country and honoured their families.
