More than a dozen businesses were fined and three restaurants were closed across the country for breaking Covid-19 safety measures.
At the weekend, Dubai Economy fined 21 commercial establishments and warned six other shops for non-compliance with new regulations that seek to prevent the spread of the virus.
Inspectors from Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection visited a number of venues, including retail outlets, medical supply companies, perfume shops and money exchange houses, across the emirate.
The most predominant infractions included staff not wearing face masks and non compliance with physical distancing.
Six hopes were warned for not placing physical distancing stickers on the ground.
Inspectors found 1,354 shops around the emirate to be in full compliance with safety measures.
Dubai Economy encouraged the public to report any infractions to help protect public safety by calling 600 545 555 or visiting the consumerrights.ae website.
“Dubai Economy reminds stern action will be taken against any non-compliance with the precautionary measures found during its inspections or that which is brought to its attention by consumers and the public,” a representative said.
In Ajman, three restaurants were ordered to close by the emirate's Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management team for failing to adhere to social distancing measures.
“The authorities will not tolerate anyone who does not abide by the specified requirements and procedures,” a representative said.
This month, a restaurant on Dubai’s Bluewaters Island was ordered to close by the authorities, after it had failed to adhere to strict social distancing measures.
Dubai Police also issued thousands of fines in malls across the emirate to try to curb an increase in the number of people being infected by Covid-19.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

How to apply for a drone permit
- Individuals must register on UAE Drone app or website using their UAE Pass
- Add all their personal details, including name, nationality, passport number, Emiratis ID, email and phone number
- Upload the training certificate from a centre accredited by the GCAA
- Submit their request
