The Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development has closed 325 businesses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, after staff  tested positive for the coronavirus.

Another 29 businesses were shut for failing to abide by Covid-19 safety rules.

The department urged business owners to follow all precautionary measures to help curb the infection and ensure the safety of their staff.

In Dubai, authorities temporarily closed 32 food outlets and issued warnings to a further 472 for flouting Covid-19 rules this year.

Dubai Municipality said its inspectors have carried out 5,841 visits in 2021 to establishments such as restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and grocery stores, to ensure they are following safety measures.

Traders are allowed to operate during the pandemic, but must comply with coronavirus regulations governing hygiene, wearing face masks and social distancing.

Coronavirus cases and deaths have increased in the UAE since the start of the year.

The country has recorded 191 deaths in February, so far.

Officials have taken steps to drive down infections.

Schools in Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain switched to online learning while capacity at public venues such as malls, cinemas and hotels was cut in all parts of the country.

Inspections in malls and business establishments are being regularly carried out to ensure compliance with the rules.

Labour dispute

The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested. The outcome of the labour court proceedings can directly affect eligibility.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
  • Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
  • Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
  • Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
  • Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
  • Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
