Thousands of tonnes of used clothes were donated to charity in Dubai last year.
The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department collected 2,109 tonnes of clothes, worth Dh9.6 million, through their Clothing Bank initiative.
The used clothing will be recycled, donated or resold to support other charitable efforts carried out by IACAD both within UAE and abroad.
The Clothing Bank initiative was launched with the aim of reducing the environmental burden of clothing waste by providing clothes to those in need and generating revenue to direct to other charitable projects.
Donation boxes were set up in more than 580 locations across Dubai. The IACAD Charity Work Sector 30-person team would empty and clean the boxes three times a month before sorting the clothes.
The total amount of money IACAD collected from charitable activities last year was Dh121m.
