ABU DHABI // Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, on Thursday met the South Korean president, Park Geun-hye, and agreed on a number of projects to further bilateral relations.
They include the establishment of a Korean cultural centre in the UAE, a memorandum of understanding on jointly entering into peaceful nuclear energy projects in other countries, and several other initiatives discussed at Al Mushrif Palace, according to state news agency Wam.
These included agreements on co-operation in agriculture and halal food, the establishment of joint trade projects in other countries and assistance in customs matters between the UAE and South Korea.
Sheikh Mohammed stressed the importance of the long-standing relations between the two countries.
Speaking at the UAE-Korea Business Forum in Abu Dhabi, Ms Park said that South Korea and the UAE have become strategic partners and that this relationship would strengthen ties in the nuclear energy field.
“I seize this opportunity to express our appreciation and gratitude for the efforts exerted in economic development between the two countries.”
She also said that South Korea was looking forward to cooperating with UAE companies to enhance their presence in Asia, and to Korean companies to expand their business in the Middle East.
The UAE and South Korea have collaborated on several high-profile deals in recent years, most notably to construct the Arab world’s first nuclear reactors in Abu Dhabi.

A little about CVRL
Founded in 1985 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) is a government diagnostic centre that provides testing and research facilities to the UAE and neighbouring countries.
One of its main goals is to provide permanent treatment solutions for veterinary related diseases.
The taxidermy centre was established 12 years ago and is headed by Dr Ulrich Wernery.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially

Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.
