Thousands of blue-collar workers were honoured at an event in Dubai to celebrate International Labour Day, which is marked annually.
The event, held in Al Quoz on Saturday, celebrated the hard work of labourers across the country who hail from countries including India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
About 2,000 workers from companies in Dubai marked the occasion alongside officials from Dubai Police, Dubai Municipality and other government personnel. It was organised by the Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs in Dubai.
Those in attendance were distributed gifts and food parcels, while dancers took to the stage to entertain the crowds.
The UAE is home to more than two million labourers who have helped build some of the world’s most recognised buildings including the Burj Khalifa, the Burj Al Arab and the Museum of the Future.
During the event, Maj Gen Obaid bin Suroor, Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs, honoured the workers during a speech and thanked them for their hard work.

Ziina users can donate to relief efforts in Beirut
Ziina users will be able to use the app to help relief efforts in Beirut, which has been left reeling after an August blast caused an estimated $15 billion in damage and left thousands homeless. Ziina has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to raise money for the Lebanese capital, co-founder Faisal Toukan says. “As of October 1, the UNHCR has the first certified badge on Ziina and is automatically part of user's top friends' list during this campaign. Users can now donate any amount to the Beirut relief with two clicks. The money raised will go towards rebuilding houses for the families that were impacted by the explosion.”
