UAE authorities have started distributing food in Ghana, Angola and Uganda.

Parcels containing ingredients for 2.5 million meals will be distributed to people living in Zongo communities and slums in Accra, Ghana’s capital.

In Angola, UAE authorities have collaborated with the local food bank to distribute 1.25 million meals to residents of the capital Luanda.

In Uganda, UAE officials and the local Haba Na Haba Food Bank will deliver ingredients for 1.25 million meals to low-income individuals and families registered with the food bank.

On Wednesday, the Emirates also sent 50 tonnes of food aid to Tajikistan and 46 tonnes to Egypt.

In one of the biggest food drives of its kind, the Emirates will fund 100 million meals in 30 countries during Ramadan.

On April 17, authorities said low-income families, refugees, orphans and widows in Jordan, Egypt and Pakistan had started receiving food to help them prepare meals throughout the holy month.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), organiser of the 100 Million Meals campaign, has joined international and local partners in each beneficiary country.

MBRGI and the UN World Food Programme will also distribute cash vouchers to the needy in Palestine and refugee camps in Jordan and Bangladesh.

The vouchers can be used at local food banks.

The UAE officially reached its Dh100 million target for the 100 Million Meals campaign in just 10 days.

A website allowed the public to donate as little as Dh10 to fund 10 meals, rising to Dh500 or more.

The total was reached thanks to the generosity of 185,000 donors inside and outside of the Emirates.

In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability. Air Miles is linked up to HSBC credit cards and can also be earned through retail partners such as Spinneys, Sharaf DG and The Toy Store.

An Emirates Dubai-London round-trip ticket costs 180,000 miles on the Air Miles website. But customers earn these ‘miles’ at a much faster rate than airline miles. Adidas offers two air miles per Dh1 spent. Air Miles has partnerships with websites as well, so booking.com and agoda.com offer three miles per Dh1 spent.

“If you use your HSBC credit card when shopping at our partners, you are able to earn Air Miles twice which will mean you can get that flight reward faster and for less spend,” says Paul Lacey, the managing director for Europe, Middle East and India for Aimia, which owns and operates Air Miles Middle East.
