The UAE collected Dh78million in the first week of launching the 100 Million Meals campaign, authorities said on Saturday.
The money will enable 78 million meals to be distributed to people in 20 countries.
“Raising more than half of the targeted donations in less than a week since the launch of the campaign reflects the keenness of the UAE community to support the country’s humanitarian efforts to provide relief to people in need across the world,” said Mohammad Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and secretary general of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives.
The Emirates will pay for 100 million meals during Ramadan.
Donations poured in from individuals and companies, inside and outside the UAE, since the campaign was launched on April 11.
Every Dh1 donated helps to provide one meal in countries across the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Poor families, refugees, orphans and widows in Jordan, Egypt and Pakistan have started receiving ingredients that will help them prepare meals throughout the holy month.
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, which organised the 100 Million Meals campaign, has joined up with international and local partners in each beneficiary country to deliver the parcels.
A website set up for the campaign allows the public to donate as little as Dh10 to fund 10 meals, rising to Dh500 or more.
UAE residents and citizens can donate through the phone providers Etisalat and Du.
To donate, text the word “meal” to the following numbers:

1038 for a Dh500 contribution
Larger donations can be made via the campaign’s call centre on 800 4999.

Uefa Nations League: How it works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.
Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.

Weather warnings show that Storm Eunice is soon to make landfall. The videographer and I are scrambling to return to the other side of the Channel before it does. As we race to the port of Calais, I see miles of wire fencing topped with barbed wire all around it, a silent ‘Keep Out’ sign for those who, unlike us, aren’t lucky enough to have the right to move freely and safely across borders.
We set sail on a giant ferry whose length dwarfs the dinghies migrants use by nearly a 100 times. Despite the windy rain lashing at the portholes, we arrive safely in Dover; grateful but acutely aware of the miserable conditions the people we’ve left behind are in and of the privilege of choice.

Who is Mohammed Al Halbousi?
The new speaker of Iraq’s parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi is the youngest person ever to serve in the role.
The 37-year-old was born in Al Garmah in Anbar and studied civil engineering in Baghdad before going into business. His development company Al Hadeed undertook reconstruction contracts rebuilding parts of Fallujah’s infrastructure.
He entered parliament in 2014 and served as a member of the human rights and finance committees until 2017. In August last year he was appointed governor of Anbar, a role in which he has struggled to secure funding to provide services in the war-damaged province and to secure the withdrawal of Shia militias. He relinquished the post when he was sworn in as a member of parliament on September 3.
He is a member of the Al Hal Sunni-based political party and the Sunni-led Coalition of Iraqi Forces, which is Iraq’s largest Sunni alliance with 37 seats from the May 12 election.
He maintains good relations with former Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s State of Law Coaliton, Hadi Al Amiri’s Badr Organisation and Iranian officials.
