A government worker abused his position and official uniform to lure a student into his car where he tried to sexually assault him, a Dubai court was told.
The Sudanese man, an employee at Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority, is charged with sexual assault and attempted rape. How he pleaded on Sunday was not disclosed in court records.
The court heard that the man picked up a Bangladeshi student, 20, near a driving institute in Warsan 3 on November 20 last year.
"I was waiting for the bus when he stopped his car and offered me a lift. I declined at first but he insisted and was in uniform so I thought it would be fine," said the student.
He said the accused touched his legs but he pushed his hand away.
"He then laughed and said he was only joking, but when he took a longer and deserted route, I dialled 999 without him noticing and kept the line open," said the student.
The worker drove the student to a remote area where he allegedly molested him.
“He dragged me out of the car, pulled my trousers down and tried to rape me but I ran away,” the student said.
He only returned to the car when the accused promised he would not touch him again.
"I returned to his car because I wanted my bag back, and he then drove me back to the place he picked me up from," said the student.
A police patrol pulled over at the same time but the accused sped off. He was arrested later the same day.
The next hearing is scheduled for March 17.

What: The Al Burda Festival

The Al Burda Festival is a celebration of Islamic art and culture, featuring talks, performances and exhibitions. Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, this one-day event opens with a session on the future of Islamic art. With this in mind, it is followed by a number of workshops and “masterclass” sessions in everything from calligraphy and typography to geometry and the origins of Islamic design. There will also be discussions on subjects including ‘Who is the Audience for Islamic Art?’ and ‘New Markets for Islamic Design.’ A live performance from Kuwaiti guitarist Yousif Yaseen should be one of the highlights of the day.
