This untapped treasure is set to become a shining jewel for Abu Dhabi thanks to a bold Dh5 billion vision. The long-neglected Jubail Island, nestled between Saadiyat Island and Yas Island, is to be transformed into a picturesque home for up to 6,000 residents eager for a tranquil sanctuary far away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. While soaring skyscrapers and massive malls are a familiar setting for so many UAE urban dwellers, residents will be able to go back to nature in six purpose-built villages. Jubail Island Investment Company, developers of the ambitious project, have said wildlife will be protected in a sprawling spot which is home to gazelle, flamingos, sea turtles and mangrove forests. Around 25,000 new mangroves are to be planted over the next year. In addition, around 10 kilometres of new canals around the outskirts of the island will be designed to improve the supply of water and offer a new home to fish. What may appear to be a fantasy island plan is primed to become reality in the next four years.
