ABU DHABI // Timothy Geithner, the US Treasury secretary, was thanked yesterday for the part his country played in helping Abu Dhabi's winning bid to host the International Renewable Agency (Irena), which, he said, would become "a global example of innovation". On a one-day trip to the capital, Mr Geithner - the most senior US official to visit the UAE since Abu Dhabi won the contest on June 29 - met Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, the Minister of Foreign Trade.
Sources said the UAE's "gratitude" was expressed over the role US officials played in the final hours preceding a vote on the headquarters, when they helped to achieve a "face-saving formula" by which two European rivals, Bonn and Vienna, withdrew from the contest. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, the Foreign Minister, had said the last-minute withdrawals of the German and Austrian cities stemmed from a "desire for accord" at the summit of Irena's 136 members in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh.
The US had officially joined Irena on the day of the vote, and from the onset officials from its Department of State voiced their support of the UAE. On Tuesday, in a speech to the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce, Mr Geithner lauded the UAE's investments into new sources of energy. "In a few years, the world will see its first zero-carbon, zero-waste city, located in the UAE, fully powered by renewable energy," he said, referring to the Masdar City development.
"It will be home to the recently formed International Renewable Energy Agency and will serve as a global example of innovation." The agency will be housed in temporary buildings in the capital for two and a half years until its headquarters in Masdar City is complete. Officials have said it will be the first "energy positive" office building, which will have rooftop solar panels that produce more electricity than it consumes.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.

The two minute video posted on YouTube is a compilation of crashes and explosion as the company, created by billionaire Elon Musk, refined the technique of reusable space flight.
SpaceX is able to land its rockets on land once they have completed the first stage of their mission, and is able to resuse them multiple times - a first for space flight.
But as the video, How Not to Land an Orbital Rocket Booster, demonstrates, it was a case if you fail, try and try again.
Labour dispute
