Three Pakistani drivers involved in heroin smuggling to Qatar and Saudi Arabia were caught by police before embarking on their latest journey, a Dubai court heard on Sunday.
The trio, who prosecutors said were to smuggle 2.2kg of the drug to Qatar for 400,000 Pakistani rupees (Dh14,000), were referred to Dubai Criminal Court for possession but the charge was amended by the court to possessing drugs without a purpose.
Prosecutors said that the men, aged 35, 38 and 47, were arrested on February 27 after police received a tip-off.
“We received confirmed information about one of them using and selling heroin, so we checked the tip and then obtained an arrest warrant,” said a police captain, 41.
One of them was arrested in Sharjah and admitted he had heroin hidden in the taxi he drove, the captain added.
Police found the drugs in the taxi and more in the man’s clothes at his home.
“He told us he was going to hand it to a man in Dubai, so we had him arrange for a delivery of the drugs and the man who arrived to pick up the heroin was arrested,” said the captain.
The second Pakistani told police about the third man, saying that he was sent by the third man to pick the drugs up. Another delivery was arranged under the supervision of police and the third man was arrested in Ras Al Khor, Dubai.
The police captain said the trio admitted to being directed by a man in Pakistan to handle heroin deliveries and sales in return for some profit.
“They confessed to smuggling drugs to Qatar and Saudi Arabia before being arrested this time,” said the captain.
One of the defendants admitted possessing the drugs and told the court that it was for his personal use but the other two denied the charges.
The next hearing will be on August 8.
