DUBAI // Police say they have arrested four Eastern Europeans who stole Dh3 million worth of gold jewellery from homes and then buried the pieces near public beaches.
Dubai Police CID said the gang disguised themselves as tourists and would break into houses after the occupants had gone to work.
Police chief Maj Gen Khamis Al Muzeina said the suspects had travelled to Dubai to steal from homes and smuggle their booty out of the country.
Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri, head of CID, said the arrests were carried out after complaints were made about thefts in different areas of Dubai.
CID officers connected the robberies and uncovered the suspects’ identities.
Gen Al Mansouri said police sent a description of the stolen goods to the UAE’s exit points and to jewellery shops.
The suspects were then monitored and tracked to a hotel in Naif, Deira.
After each operation, the gang would go to an area near a public beach and bury the stolen goods, marking the spot.
All of the gold was retrieved and returned to its owners, police said.
