Fugitive US businessman Zack Shahin returned to UAE, says spokesman

A fugitive American businessman who is facing multi-million dirham corruption charges in Dubai has been returned to the UAE after jumping his Dh4.7 million bail, his spokesman said in a statement.

Zack Shahin was detained by Yemeni authorities last month as he sought American diplomatic assistance to travel onward to the United States.

He had been released from a Dubai jail in July after posting a Dh4.7 million bail and promising to surrender his passport. He had been awaiting trial for more than four years on charges of financial improprieties while chief executive of Deyaar, a Dubai-based development company. He denies any wrongdoing.

Darren Spinck, spokesman for Mr Shahin, claimed that the businessman was in fear of his life after being attacked at his hotel following his release from prison.

Mr Spinck said: "The attackers proceeded to attack Zack physically, including using mace and a taser to render him unable to defend himself."
