Police in Ras Al Khaimah have launched a major eco-friendly drive - by offering free registration on electric cars for the next three years.
Registration, renewal and ownership transfer on electric vehicles will be exempt from charges from October 1 until December 31, 2021.
It's all part of an ongoing effort to increase the use of electric cars in the emirate and cut down on fuel consumption.
The move was announced under the directives of Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
Major-General Ali Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of the Ras Al Khaimah Police, said the initiative is a positive step towards achieving the emirate’s energy saving and environmental protection strategy.
The campaign is in line with the emirate's strategy to promote renewable energy sources in a bid to reduce energy consumption by 30 per cent by 2040.
Earlier this month, Ras Al Khaimah's municipality department unveiled a new programme, called Barjeel, designed to moderate the energy and water consumption of new constructions by 30 per cent.
The emirate is a relative newcomer to the clean energy drive in the region, having set up its renewables and energy efficiency office under a year ago.
The UAE, which currently meets 98 per cent of its power generation needs from gas, targets increasing clean energy use by 50 per cent and improving energy efficiency by 40 per cent by the middle of the century, deploying a total capacity of 44 gigawatts from renewable sources by 2050.
