Four held for electronics goods theft

The men are arrested on suspicion of stealing up to Dh1 million worth of goods from the warehouse of a company they were working for.

DUBAI // Four people have been arrested on suspicion of stealing up to Dh1 million (US$270,000) worth of goods from the warehouse of a large electronics company they were working for. The men were all Indian nationals and in their 20s. It was not known how long the theft had been going on but Dubai Police said it could have been a few years. The men held various jobs at the company, based in Jebel Ali Free Zone, including posts in accounting and sales.

A spokesman from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Dubai Police said the store manager became suspicious on Oct 19 when the four men removed 12 plasma television screens from the company's warehouse. CID investigations led to one worker, identified as JI, who was put under surveillance. He was arrested and questioned two days later. "He confessed immediately," said the spokesman. JI also turned in his three accomplices, DB, BS, and SM, who all lived and worked together.

When officers raided their place of residence at Jebel Ali port, they found 106 pieces of electrical equipment, which included DVD players, stereos, transmitters and receivers. "They hid them in various places - electrical goods were found under the beds, in wardrobes and in boxes," he said. More accomplices were arrested in the same residence after police found stolen goods in eight rooms in the men's residence camp.

"Six more men helped them hide the equipment, and have also been taken in," said the spokesman. The goods police found are worth Dh470,000, but since it is believed the operation had been going on for some time, more merchandise could have been transported overseas and the value of stolen property could be as much as Dh1 million, he said. All 10 men have been referred to the public prosecution, and the equipment has been returned to the company.
