Subsidies worth Dh3.8 million per year will be given out to local fishermen to support the industry, officials announced today. The initiative will target poor local fishermen from all the seven emirates, entitling them to fuel allowances worth from Dh500 to Dh800 per month. The Ministry of Environment and Water has already started issuing the registration cards that will enable those eligible to claim their fuel money. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Foundation and Dubai Islamic Bank are footing the bill. A total of 581, out of more than 6,000 local fishermen in the country will be given the subsidy. The total number of fishermen in the country has been rising steadily and is now at around 22,000 people. That growth has lead to pressure on the UAE's fishing resources but Ministry officials hope a cap on the number of boats and a recently introduced minimum length requirements for the catch will help remedy the situation. Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
