First batch of Emiratis begin Godolphin equestrian scholarship programme

ABU DHABI // The first batch of Emiratis have begun a 10-month course as part of a programme offering training in horse racing.

The Masar Godolphin scholarship, offered under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, was awarded to eight Emirati men and women ages 23 to 30 who demonstrated an interest in the sport.

The course will include academic and practical training in the UAE, UK and Ireland.

John Ferguson, chief executive and racing manager for Godolphin, said the programme demonstrated Sheikh Mohammed’s continued passion for horse breeding and racing.

“Masar Godolphin participants will be privileged to experience many aspects of horse racing and breeding in both Europe and the UAE, preparing them incredibly well for a future in this most exciting and demanding business,” he said.

The high calibre of applicants for the eight spots made the selection difficult, said Hugh Anderson, managing director for Godolphin in the UK and Dubai.

“The love of horses is part of the DNA of Dubai and this was reflected in the large number of outstanding applications we received from UAE nationals who wanted to immerse themselves in the world of thoroughbred horse breeding and racing,” said Mr Anderson.

The inaugural class of 2017 includes Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, Amna Banihashem, Ayesha Al Fugaee, Hasna Ali, Hussain Al Marzouqi, Ibrahim Aqil, Muna Al Mazrouei and Sultan Al Ameri.
