ABU DHABI // After the most modern of Formula One cars power around the Yas Marina Circuit during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the next race at the track will feature classic cars from the sport's past. Formula One cars from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s will visit Yas Island for the Masters Historic Racing Series on January 21-23.
On the same weekend, the types of cars seen at the Le Mans 24-hour race in the 1960s and 1970s will compete in the World Sportscar Masters series. They will be the first races on the island after the inaugural Grand Prix on November 1.
It will be the first time such cars have raced in the Gulf region. The series usually holds events on circuits in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. "Bringing these famous classic racing cars to the emirate is part of our comprehensive programme to offer the UAE a broad range of the world's top motorsports," said Richard Cregan, the chief executive of the Yas Marina Circuit.
"On the track, spectators will witness some of the most sensational racing between cars of great historical importance.
"Off the track, there will be fantastic entertainment and activities for a truly unique experience."
Each series will race three times over the weekend, including once each at night.
Classic car owners and members of car clubs in the UAE will be able to display their vehicles during the race weekend.
A month later, the Australian V8 Series will take place at Yas Marina on February 18-20.

How to apply for a drone permit

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
