ABU DHABI // An extradition treaty between the UAE and Indonesia is being drafted at a conference in the capital. Officials from both countries met yesterday for the start of the three-day conference organised by the Ministry of Justice. The Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Public Prosecution in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and representatives from Interpol participated.
The treaty will be examined by both countries after the conference. Talks started last year as justice officials from the UAE travelled to Singapore and Malaysia to meet with their counterparts. The agreement would allow for somebody facing criminal charges to be deported from one country to the other. Extradition would apply strictly in criminal cases. The UAE has in the past year worked on extradition deals with Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Canada, Germany and Thailand.
Although many of the recipient countries signed the extradition agreements, their laws prohibit the extradition of a criminal to a country where the death penalty is sought. In this case, the host country is required to pursue its own trial. myoussef@thenational.ae

UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
