UAE weather: More showers likely for Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi residents woke up to rain on Friday as the emirate’s media office warned them “unstable weather” would persist over the weekend.

Rain “of varying intensity” and strong winds, of up to 60kph, that may pick up dust and reduce visibility were due to have begun on Wednesday and will continue through to Sunday.

Rain began to fall in Abu Dhabi at 8.30am on Friday, after clouds covered the last bit of morning sun. The spell did not last long but local forecasters said there would be more on the way – as well as associated thunder and lightning at times.

Similar conditions are expected along most of the the country’s west coast, including Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Ajman, where a yellow “Be Aware” warning was issued by the National Centre of Meteorology. The warning asks people to be “on the lookout” whenever outdoors.

Forecasters said showers were due along with “fresh winds” that would cause blowing dust and hazy conditions. Forecasters warned motorists to be careful while driving due to the poor visibility.

The forecasts come as the UAE experiences extreme differences in temperatures across various areas. The lowest temperature recorded across the country on Thursday was 20.1°C in Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, while the highest was 45°C in Al Ruwais, two hours west of Abu Dhabi city.

Temperatures are expected to hover between 42°C and 26°C along the coast, 44°C and 25°C inland and 30°C to 19°C in the mountains.

The sea will be rough in the Arabian Gulf and moderate, becoming rough at times in the Sea of Oman.

April was a rainy month in the Emirates, which has also seen higher temperatures on average.

Top investing tips for UAE residents in 2021

Build an emergency fund: Make sure you have enough cash to cover six months of expenses as a buffer against unexpected problems before you begin investing, advises Steve Cronin, the founder of DeadSimpleSaving.com.

Think long-term: When you invest, you need to have a long-term mindset, so don’t worry about momentary ups and downs in the stock market.

Invest worldwide: Diversify your investments globally, ideally by way of a global stock index fund.

Is your money tied up: Avoid anything where you cannot get your money back in full within a month at any time without any penalty.

Skip past the promises: “If an investment product is offering more than 10 per cent return per year, it is either extremely risky or a scam,” Mr Cronin says.

Choose plans with low fees: Make sure that any funds you buy do not charge more than 1 per cent in fees, Mr Cronin says. “If you invest by yourself, you can easily stay below this figure.” Managed funds and commissionable investments often come with higher fees.

Be sceptical about recommendations: If someone suggests an investment to you, ask if they stand to gain, advises Mr Cronin. “If they are receiving commission, they are unlikely to recommend an investment that’s best for you.”

Get financially independent: Mr Cronin advises UAE residents to pursue financial independence. Start with a Google search and improve your knowledge via expat investing websites or Facebook groups such as SimplyFI.
