Heavy rain fell across the UAE on Monday morning with forecasters predicting more to come.

People on the east coast woke to dark skies with the town of Murbah, north of Fujairah city, among those hit by downpours.

It represents a second day of showers for the east coast as temperatures drop.

The lowest temperature recorded on Monday was only 10.6°C in Jebel Jais at 7am.

Videos posted on the National Centre of Meteorology's Twitter feed on Sunday, meanwhile, showed lashing rain drenching towns along the coast.

Al Bidya and Khor Fakkan were among the towns affected, with footage showing driving rain and grey skies.

Forecasters expect the wet weather to continue.

The National Centre of Meteorology warned people to expect cloud, fog and rain – especially in the east – to continue until the weekend.

Winds up to 40 kilometres per hour could also kick up dust clouds, particularly in exposed areas.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?

The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.

A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.

Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.

The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.

When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.
