The UAE woke up to another stormy day on Wednesday – and forecasters warn the weather will only worsen over the weekend, bringing the potential of flash flooding.
Satellite images show the entire country covered by cloud bringing heavy rain, thunder and lightning, as the National Centre for Meteorology issued a weather warning in force until 6pm.
Rain and strong winds will bring dust storms reducing visibility to less than 2 kilometres at times, it said.
Rainfall will begin over scattered areas in the west and on the coast, spreading inland and towards northern parts of the country. The rain will be heavy at times and accompanied by occasional thunder and lightning.
Abu Dhabi Police issued an alert urging motorists to drive carefully and avoid taking videos on their phones, while Dubai Police warned drivers to reduce their speed to avoid aquaplaning.
The unsettled period is expected to last into next week.
But from Friday night into Sunday it will intensify, bringing rain of different intensities “over most areas,” which will be accompanied by hail, thunder, lightning and even flash flooding.
Temperatures today will range between from 22°C and 29°C in Abu Dhabi, and 24°C and 28°C in Dubai, the weather bureau said.
Winds are expected to pick up slightly from Tuesday and may reach up to 65kph by the coast, causing dust storms in exposed areas.
The wind will make conditions rough to very rough at times in the Arabian Gulf. But the Sea of Oman will be moderate.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
