DUBAI // Significant steps have been taken towards Dubai’s renewable energy targets with the announcement of the third phase of solar energy plans to make the emirate cleaner and greener by 2021.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority aims to increase the share of renewable energy targets to 7 per cent by 2020 and 15 per cent by 2030 as a result of the Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, a photovoltaic plant due to be operational by April 2017.
It is one of the largest renewable energy projects in the region, and is a major part of UAE Vision 2021 to achieve a sustainable environment in terms of air quality, conserving water resources, more reliance on clean energy, and implementing green development.
The Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 also aims to diversify energy sources to include 71 per cent from natural gas, 15 per cent from solar energy, 7 per cent from clean coal, and 7 per cent from nuclear power.
