Low water levels in farms across the country has encouraged scientists to experiment on developing salt resistant plants.
Researchers in Sharjah are looking to cultivate salt-tolerant plants to improve productivity and help farmers boost their incomes.
Soil samples have been collected from the Al Zubair area, for analysis by experts at the International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) to begin cultivating crops with salinity resistance.
Salinity in the soil can prevent roots from performing their osmotic activity, where water and nutrients cannot move into the plant, having the same impact on growth as a drought.
Cultivating salt resistant crops should help increase the yield for farmers, scientists have said.
“The salinity and low water levels suffered by some of the emirate's farms has prompted the department to utilise the experience of ICBA and attempt to convince farmers to cultivate salt-tolerant plants,” said Salim bin Mohammed Al Naqbi, head of Sharjah's Department of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture.
“The objective is to improve productivity and boost farm income.”

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion
The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".
The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.
He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.
"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.
As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.

Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.
A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.
Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.
A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.
On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.
The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.
Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.
The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.
