ABU DHABI // Masdar City will tomorrow reopen its gates to visitors, with an organic street market and displays of the carbon-neutral initiative's technology and research.
Organisers of The Market@Masdar City, the second such event, have planned a fun-filled family day out with visitors able to see one of the world's greenest campuses and learn more about Masdar's pilot projects and research.
They can also ride the electric pod cars, which will take passengers on a tour of the city, and see examples of "green" living.
"The overriding message of The Market@Masdar City is sustainability," said Ahmed Baghoum, the director of the Masdar City free zone. "[We] aim to help carry this message across to the broader community and showcase the work Masdar is doing.
"Masdar aims to make Abu Dhabi the pre-eminent source of renewable energy knowledge, development, implementation and the world's benchmark for sustainable development."
Visitors will be able to buy fresh organic produce from Ripe, organic cosmetics and skincare products by Solace Organics, and shawarmas from the Emirati company Wild Peeta.
Entertainment will include a "mad scientist" workshop - teaching children science, arts and crafts - a prize draw, magic shows, games for children and costumes made from recycled materials.
The Little Fair Trade Shop will sell items made of recycled materials from developing nations around the world. All profits made will be reinvested into the communities from where items came.
Based on the success of the market last April, Mr Baghoum is hoping for between 8,000 and 10,000 visitors tomorrow.
The Market@Masdar is to run every six weeks on Fridays between 10am to 5pm.
