DUBAI // Two parks have opened on school campuses as part of the municipality’s 34th Plantation Week festivities.
The school parks are part of an effort to get the student community more engaged in horticulture.
One of the parks has opened in Al Wasl Campus and the other in the Al Maktoum School. They are part of a larger project set out by the municipality to spread green awareness by pairing schools with private sector companies.
The Al Wasl Campus and Al Maktoum schools were part of four schools shortlisted for the implementation of the parks project after an assessment from the Public Parks and Horticulture Department.
Twelve other schools have also shown that they meet the criteria assigned by the department’s technical team.
To garner more engagement from the community, the project will allow private companies to sponsor these parks at selected educational facilities. Teachers from those schools will be assigned the role of organising the development of the parks.
Selected schools will be responsible for providing the space, irrigation facilities and the special team of students responsible for planting and maintaining the parks.
Officials at the municipality said that the opening of school parks comes as part of fulfilling the strategic vision to expand the green areas of the city through active participation of the student community.
The civic body has also organised a floral arts workshop as part of the third day of activities of Plantation Week.
