ABU DHABI // Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of legendary conservationist Jacques, said that the UAE’s passion for diving should help to keep the oceans healthy.
“I’m really starting to discover how rich the diving is here. Through this summit I’ve met a lot of very interesting people who work here,” said the 33-year-old at the Eye on Earth Summit.
“I’ve met the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, I’ve seen a lot of the work that they have been doing and how maybe we can tie it into the work I’ve been doing,” he said.
That work, Cousteau Divers, is a non-government marine protection organisation that he started six years ago. It combines his love for the ocean with extensive data collection.
Divers upload photos, dive logs and video of their trips to the organisation’s website to create a database.
“I love diving. I want to do something to protect the seas and I know I can’t do it alone. I know I am not the only one who cares – there are millions of divers out there who care just as much about the ocean.
“I was speaking with a scientist from Scipps Institute of Oceanography and he said we need to collect as much information as we can and one day we will slice through that information and derive knowledge from it,” said Mr Cousteau, who also works with the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
His latest initiative, Project Hermes, was conceived to obtain data in much the same way but it is focused on ocean temperatures.
“I hadn’t realised that nobody knew the temperature of the ocean. It’s incredibly important to foster creativity to find solutions,” he said.
Project Hermes will function with the same crowdsourced-collection methods that his other projects have used.
Mr Cousteau said he wanted to return to the UAE to promote more of his work and collaborate with local groups.
However, like so much at the Eye to Earth summit, the end goal is not just to collect information.
“Unfortunately, I haven’t had enough time to dive in the Arabian Gulf,” he said. “But there is some great diving and work to be done here.”

What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which can lead to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer.
There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E.
Hepatitis C is mostly transmitted through exposure to infective blood. This can occur through blood transfusions, contaminated injections during medical procedures, and through injecting drugs. Sexual transmission is also possible, but is much less common.
People infected with hepatitis C experience few or no symptoms, meaning they can live with the virus for years without being diagnosed. This delay in treatment can increase the risk of significant liver damage.
There are an estimated 170 million carriers of Hepatitis C around the world.
The virus causes approximately 399,000 fatalities each year worldwide, according to WHO.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Financial considerations before buying a property
Buyers should try to pay as much in cash as possible for a property, limiting the mortgage value to as little as they can afford.
