ABU DHABI // Egyptians in the UAE have voted strongly for Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh to be their next president, the embassy said yesterday.
Mr Aboul Fotouh, who left the Muslim Brotherhood last year after deciding to run for president, received 12,150 votes, well ahead of second-placed Hamdeen Sabahi, leader of the Dignity Party, who received 8,741 votes. He was followed by Amr Moussa, the country’s former foreign minister, who received 7,814 votes.
Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, came in fourth with 7,182 votes.
Ahmed Shafiq, a former prime minister who many parliamentary members wanted out of the race for being too close to the old regime, received 3,390 votes.
Some 260 votes were invalid.
Of the approximately 61,000 Egyptians registered for the UAE ballot, 40,443 voted – a turnout of 66.2 per cent. Embassy staff sorted through the ballots yesterday and finalised the results after eight hours of counting as candidates’ representatives watched.
Results from Saudi Arabia are pending. Those, said Tamer Mansour, Egypt’s ambassador to the UAE, will give a more telling indication of what the final result might be, as Saudi is home to around a quarter of a million Egyptians – the most outside Egypt, and around half the overseas total.
Still, it is a small proportion of the total electorate of 53 million.
The first round of voting in Egypt itself is to take place on Wednesday and Thursday.
“This will just give us an idea, but we will still do not know yet who will win,” he said.
