DUBAI // An Australian university with a branch in Dubai has been ranked in the world's top 25 young universities.
The QS World University Rankings rated the University of Wollongong the 24th best institution less than 50 years old. The university was established in 1975 and its Dubai branch in 1993.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology came first, followed by Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and University of Warwick in the UK.
"This is an important indicator that the University of Wollongong is moving in the right direction," said vice chancellor, Prof Paul Wellings. "We've been judged to be performing very well in the face of strong global competition from new universities, particularly in China, Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore.
University of Wollongong Dubai said the "ranking is also a testament to the quality of education offered by the University of Wollongong in Dubai, which bases its degree programmes on the equivalent Australian curriculum".
Programmes in Dubai reflect the academic standards of the main branch, management said.
The QS rankings were conceived to give "a multifaceted view of the relative strengths of the world's leading universities", considering more than 2,000 and ranking more than 700.

Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.

Who is Mohammed Al Halbousi?
The new speaker of Iraq’s parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi is the youngest person ever to serve in the role.
The 37-year-old was born in Al Garmah in Anbar and studied civil engineering in Baghdad before going into business. His development company Al Hadeed undertook reconstruction contracts rebuilding parts of Fallujah’s infrastructure.
He entered parliament in 2014 and served as a member of the human rights and finance committees until 2017. In August last year he was appointed governor of Anbar, a role in which he has struggled to secure funding to provide services in the war-damaged province and to secure the withdrawal of Shia militias. He relinquished the post when he was sworn in as a member of parliament on September 3.
He is a member of the Al Hal Sunni-based political party and the Sunni-led Coalition of Iraqi Forces, which is Iraq’s largest Sunni alliance with 37 seats from the May 12 election.
He maintains good relations with former Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s State of Law Coaliton, Hadi Al Amiri’s Badr Organisation and Iranian officials.
