UAE University is top in the Arab World and 76th worldwide in a list of the best institutions in emerging economies.
The American University of Sharjah also features, in 79th place.
The institutions are in the Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings 2014.
The study measures universities in countries classified as emerging economies, including BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The report on BRICS and Emerging Economies is the first in the world, according to Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
“Many of the world’s emerging economies have put the development of world-class universities at the very heart of their national strategies,” he said.
“This new ranking – a world first – will provide an unprecedented and penetrating insight into their progress.”
UAE University’s achievement is thanks to the exceptional efforts of faculty, researchers, and university staff, said Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Chancellor of the university.
The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Dr Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, said the university had continuously occupied leading ranks among world universities and had made significant strides in the past few years, which had earned it prominent Arab and world positions in different higher education tables.
