Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid on Wednesday visited a schoolboy hero and the two pupils he saved from a bus fire in Sharjah.
The Vice President and Ruler of Dubai visited the Emirati pupils at Al Qudwa School in Kalba.
"With our hero Khalifa Al Kaabi, who saved his classmates when their bus caught fire and managed to get them all out minutes before it burst into flames," he wrote on social media, alongside a picture with the boy.
"Khalifa is more than just a boy. He's a man who loves to offer a helping hand, like his president Khalifa bin Zayed."
In a video also circulated on social media, Sheikh Mohammed walks the halls of the school with Khalifa, 12, who is in Grade 7.
He also toured the eastern region of the UAE to see how the start of the school year was going.
Khalifa, 12, was one of the three boys on board the bus when it erupted in flames at 6.30am on Tuesday.
He helped to lead his friends Mohammed, 13, and Mayed, 11, and the driver, to safety.
Speaking to The National on Tuesday, Khalifa said he noticed a strange smell when he entered the bus.
“I joined my friend Mohammed and sat with him on the back seat of the bus but the smell became worse," he said.
"After a few minutes the driver stopped to check the bus and when he tried to turn the engine on again he failed.
“And that’s when the fire started to come out from the back of our seats."
Khalifa pulled his friends off their seats and rushed them out of the bus.
“The driver panicked and was in shock so I started shouting at him to get out of the bus,” he said.
The fire happened only 150 metres away from Khalifa's house. He said the explosion rocked the bus, lifting it off the ground.
Sharjah Police said the fire was quickly extinguished and that there had been no casualties.
The Ministry of Education said officials were investigating the cause of the incident "to ensure the safety and security of all the pupils", and the boys were put on another bus to take them to school.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Also on December 7 to 9, the third edition of the Gulf Car Festival (www.gulfcarfestival.com) will take over Dubai Festival City Mall, a new venue for the event. Last year's festival brought together about 900 cars worth more than Dh300 million from across the Emirates and wider Gulf region – and that first figure is set to swell by several hundred this time around, with between 1,000 and 1,200 cars expected. The first day is themed around American muscle; the second centres on supercars, exotics, European cars and classics; and the final day will major in JDM (Japanese domestic market) cars, tuned vehicles and trucks. Individuals and car clubs can register their vehicles, although the festival isn’t all static displays, with stunt drifting, a rev battle, car pulls and a burnout competition.

Nils El Accad, chief executive and owner of Organic Foods and Café, says going green is about “lifestyle and attitude” rather than a “money change”; people need to plan ahead to fill water bottles in advance and take their own bags to the supermarket, he says.
“People always want someone else to do the work; it doesn’t work like that,” he adds. “The first step: you have to consciously make that decision and change.”
When he gets a takeaway, says Mr El Accad, he takes his own glass jars instead of accepting disposable aluminium containers, paper napkins and plastic tubs, cutlery and bags from restaurants.
He also plants his own crops and herbs at home and at the Sheikh Zayed store, from basil and rosemary to beans, squashes and papayas. “If you’re going to water anything, better it be tomatoes and cucumbers, something edible, than grass,” he says.
“All this throwaway plastic - cups, bottles, forks - has to go first,” says Mr El Accad, who has banned all disposable straws, whether plastic or even paper, from the café chain.
One of the latest changes he has implemented at his stores is to offer refills of liquid laundry detergent, to save plastic. The two brands Organic Foods stocks, Organic Larder and Sonnett, are both “triple-certified - you could eat the product”.
The Organic Larder detergent will soon be delivered in 200-litre metal oil drums before being decanted into 20-litre containers in-store.
Customers can refill their bottles at least 30 times before they start to degrade, he says. Organic Larder costs Dh35.75 for one litre and Dh62 for 2.75 litres and refills will cost 15 to 20 per cent less, Mr El Accad says.
But while there are savings to be had, going green tends to come with upfront costs and extra work and planning. Are we ready to refill bottles rather than throw them away? “You have to change,” says Mr El Accad. “I can only make it available.”
