Murdoch University Dubai Announces Fees Reduction to Offer COVID-19 Relief to Students and Parents

Murdoch University Dubai has recently announced a significant adjustment to its course fees for 2021 – 2022 in response to the ongoing financial burden of the COVID-19 pandemic on many of their students and families. Murdoch University will reduce their course fees for the Dubai campus for both new and returning students across all undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The virus has changed how we live, work, study and interact with each other

“It is difficult to summarise the full impact that the COVID-19 global pandemic has had on us all”, Dr James Trotter, Murdoch University Dubai Dean and Academic President reflected. “The virus has changed how we live, work, study and interact with each other. Each one of us has endured many hardships, sacrifices and challenges over the past year, and we know that for many of our valued students and their families the economic impacts and financial hardships have been profound, and are likely to continue for many over the next 6-12 months.”

For Murdoch Dubai, their objective in this revised fee structure is to make education as affordable as possible in these challenging times. “Murdoch University has always been and remains committed to supporting the needs and aspirations of our students and their educational goals and making a high-quality international university experience as accessible as possible,” Dr Trotter said.

Dr Trotter is confident this news will be warmly welcomed by both the university’s students in the UAE and internationally. “It means our students, both current and future, will be able to pursue their dreams of a globally recognised, high-quality Australian education at our new Dubai Knowledge Park campus that is now more affordable than ever before. We are confident our revised prices make us the best value-for-money university in Dubai,” Dr Trotter explained.

Our students can expect the same high-quality learning experience that we have so proudly delivered in Dubai since 2008

According to Mr Mark Brown, General Manager of the Dubai campus, “Reducing our prices does not mean a compromise on the Murdoch University student learning experience or a reduction in quality. Our students can expect the same high-quality learning experience that we have so proudly delivered in Dubai since 2008. We simply recognise the need to assist impacted families and students.”

Murdoch Dubai will continue to offer a range of generous Academic Merit Scholarships ranging from 15% - 40% and starting from January 2021, will also introduce a new 50% scholarship for their pre-university Foundation Program, which facilitates a seamless transition from high school to higher education. It’s also an exciting pathway program for mature individuals who couldn’t access or complete a formal university education in the past.

There is also something exciting for postgraduate students too. “We are very much aware of the financial challenges for our postgraduate students, many of whom pay for their education themselves while working” said Mr Brown. “To assist them, we have reduced the fees for all our master’s courses as well as introduced a new guaranteed 20% scholarship for our MBA program for anyone who does not already qualify for a higher percentage Academic Merit Scholarship”.

In choosing to study at Murdoch University, students can be confident of studying with a globally recognised institution, ranked as one of the Top 100 Young Universities (under 50) in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings), and placed in the top 2% of global universities (QS Rankings 2020), having also been at the forefront of Australian and global research for more than 40 years.

We have an impressive reputation for conducting ground-breaking studies, and experienced international academics encourage students to be independent thinkers with a focus on the future

Being part of the Innovative Research Universities group in Australia, Murdoch University takes great pride in being a world-renowned research university. “We have an impressive reputation for conducting ground-breaking studies, and experienced international academics encourage students to be independent thinkers with a focus on the future” explained Dr Trotter. “Murdoch’s academics, alumni and students have led the way in uncovering some of the world’s most ground-breaking research discoveries. Welcoming new students into our ever-growing global community, Murdoch brings pioneering minds together to celebrate education, diversity and innovation”.

“We look forward to welcoming students to our new campus at Dubai Knowledge Park in 2021 and beyond where we will provide them with an outstanding, life-changing and rewarding educational experience”.

Under the revised fee structure, all undergraduate programs are priced at AED 155,000 for the entire course, the Master of Education and Master of Information Technology is AED 75,000, MBA is priced at AED 89,000 with a guaranteed 20% scholarship, the postgraduate Graduate Certificates in Business and Education will be AED 25,000 each and the Foundation and Diploma pathways programs will be AED 44,100 and AED 51,500 with a guaranteed 50% scholarship each.

Applications for the January intake close soon with classes commencing on 17th January 2021. The next intakes will be in May and September 2021.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?

The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.

A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.

Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.

The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.

When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

Conflict, drought, famine

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.

Band Aid

Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
