UAE pupils are keeping fighting fit from the comfort of their homes while the country combats Covid-19.
Youngsters from government and private schools across the Emirates took part in a unique school fitness championship organised by the Ministry of Education on Sunday.
The competition was geared towards helping children stay active while sports facilities are closed to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
Boys and girls were encouraged to participate by physical education teachers at schools.
The young competitors were placed in groups based on age and asked to record themselves completing required exercises within 30 seconds.
Three winners from each group will be announced on May 28.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Education organised a stay-home sports day in which children could take part remotely.
Dr Amna Al Shamsi, assistant undersecretary of the Care and Activities Sector at the Ministry of Education, said it was important for pupils to test their bodies as well as their minds.
“In an effort to maintain the pupils’ fitness and activity level, the Ministry of Education is keen on putting students’ physical and mental energy to productive use, allowing them to achieve the maximum possible benefit from their stay at home, and make the best use of their valuable time,” Dr Al Shamsi said.
“This is achieved by designing and launching exciting educational and fitness initiatives and activities that benefit their health and add more fun to their successful distance-learning experience.”
People of all ages have been thinking outside the box in an effort to stay in peak condition while restrictions on travel remain in place.
While online exercise tutorials led by the likes of Joe Wicks have proved a big hit, others have taken part in marathons on their own balconies or embarked on energy-sapping cycling treks on exercise bikes.
