ABU DHABI // Dozens of teachers and staff in the emirate's schools will begin receiving their pensions today after months of delays, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) announced in a statement yesterday.
"Adec completed procedures for settlement of pension files for 60 retired teachers and administrators working at Adec schools at the three Educational Zones in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia," the council said in the statement.
Long delays had plagued the settlement of the pensions. There are 14,000 teachers and administrative staff working under Adec in the capital city, Al Ain and the Western Region. Responsibility for the staff was transferred to Adec by a ministerial decision issued in January.
Adec "exerted great efforts to settle pension salaries" for the teachers, according to a statement issued yesterday by Dr Mugheer al Khaili, the council's director general.
Adec acknowledged that there had been delays in settling the pensions, but said it was because several government bodies were involved and some of the teachers had not filed the necessary documents.
"The delay in processing these files was due to the fact that they were shared between more than one authority and the need at each authority to ensure the accuracy of data regarding leaves [and] allowances," Dr al Khaili said.
Adec said it studied the pension applications as part of a committee including the Ministry of Education as well as pensions authorities in the capital. Pensions applications are now due every year in January.
The processing for the current batch of applications began in June, at the end of the academic year.
The pensions apply to UAE nationals only, and depend on how long they were in service and what their salaries before retirement are. Expatriates usually receive an end of service sum on retirement.

What is a robo-adviser?
Robo-advisers use an online sign-up process to gauge an investor’s risk tolerance by feeding information such as their age, income, saving goals and investment history into an algorithm, which then assigns them an investment portfolio, ranging from more conservative to higher risk ones.
These portfolios are made up of exchange traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to indices such as US and global equities, fixed-income products like bonds, though exposure to real estate, commodity ETFs or gold is also possible.
Investing in ETFs allows robo-advisers to offer fees far lower than traditional investments, such as actively managed mutual funds bought through a bank or broker. Investors can buy ETFs directly via a brokerage, but with robo-advisers they benefit from investment portfolios matched to their risk tolerance as well as being user friendly.
Many robo-advisers charge what are called wrap fees, meaning there are no additional fees such as subscription or withdrawal fees, success fees or fees for rebalancing.

Moment of the day Lahiru Gamage appeared to have been hard done by when he had his dismissal of Sami Aslam chalked off for a no-ball. Replays suggested he had not overstepped. No matter. Two balls later, the exact same combination – Gamage the bowler and Kusal Mendis at second slip – combined again to send Aslam back.
Stat of the day Haris Sohail took three wickets for one run in the only over he bowled, to end the Sri Lanka second innings in a hurry. That was as many as he had managed in total in his 10-year, 58-match first-class career to date. It was also the first time a bowler had taken three wickets having bowled just one over in an innings in Tests.
The verdict Just 119 more and with five wickets remaining seems like a perfectly attainable target for Pakistan. Factor in the fact the pitch is worn, is turning prodigiously, and that Sri Lanka’s seam bowlers have also been finding the strip to their liking, it is apparent the task is still a tough one. Still, though, thanks to Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed, it is possible.
