DUBAI // Ten private schools will open across the emirate this year, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority said yesterday.
They are four British curriculum schools, two Indian, one International Baccalaureate, one Canadian, one French and one American.
Among these, the Indian curriculum school Amity offers the lowest annual fees, ranging from Dh15,000 and Dh26,000.
The new IB school, North London Collegiate School Dubai, will charge the highest, from Dh83,000 to Dh130,000.
Amity opened last month, with the other nine schools to begin operating in September.
“Every new school that opens in Dubai gives parents more choice for their children’s education,” said Dr Abdulla Al Karam, director general of the education regulator.
“That Dubai continues to attract high numbers of new schools and new residents speaks to the growth of our economy, and to the trust that parents and school operators have in the quality of education offered here.”
Enrolment in Dubai’s private schools sector has increased by 6.6 per cent annually over the past 10 years, with 72 schools opening since 2007.
During the 2016-2017 school year, there were 273,599 pupils attending the emirate’s 185 private schools.
“The new schools opening this September are committed to serving their communities and enabling the success and well-being of their students,” said Kalthoom Al Balooshi, executive director at the authority.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders

TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENCE (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US's most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out ballistic missiles as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 150 kilometres above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then stationed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.
