A plastic bags campaign at a Dubai supermarket has led to a 24 per cent drop in their use, compared with last year.
The initiative, in which customers at Geant/Le Marche are charged a deposit of 25 fils on plastic bags they use, has led to an average reduction of one tonne of plastic bags every month.
Customers who return the bags receive their deposit back.
The supermarket donated the proceeds from uncollected deposits to the Emirates Wildlife Society - Worldwide Fund for Nature. A total of Dh200,000 was donated on Sunday.
