Dubai International Film Festival audience welcomes back stars of Bollywood sequel

DUBAI // The cast of the Bollywood film Welcome Back received a warm welcome from the audience at the Dubai International Film Festival yesterday.

The upcoming film is the sequel to 2007’s Welcome, both of which shot scenes in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, including in front of the Emirates Palace Hotel.

The first film followed a pair of mafia brothers, played by Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar, as they tried to get their sister, played by Katrina Kaif, married off.

Star-struck fans packed the Madinat Theatre for an audience with the cast of the sequel.

The cast members included heart-throb John Abraham, relative newcomer Ankita Srivastava, singing and dancing sensation Surveen Chawla, Patekar, and Kapoor, whose roles in Mission Impossible IV and Slumdog Millionaire have made him an international star. The cast were joined by producer Firoz Nadiadwala and director Anees Bazmee.

Kapoor, a regular participant at Diff, said it has been a great experience to see the festival grow in strength over the years.

“Dubai was always a home away from home for me, and I’m very fortunate that this is my fourth opportunity to showcase my films at the festival here,” he said.

“The festival is like a lucky charm to me, and hopefully that will be true for Welcome Back, too. Every time I come here there is something new that I can discover, explore and enjoy.”

Kapoor attended the inaugural festival in 2004 for a screening of his film, Mr India.

The 11th edition of the festival runs until Wednesday at venues across the emirate. At the question-and-answer session, the biggest cheers were saved for Abraham, a former model, who expressed his gratitude to his army of admirers.

“It’s easy for an actor to get consumed and say that people are your fans, but I look at them as a strong support system,” he said.

“It’s easy to get narcissistic in our job because we hear nothing but compliments and can’t take any sort of criticism.

“But it’s important that fans speak their minds and we listen to both sides of the story. I prefer it that way.

“I have a very strong support system sitting right here in the audience, and I’m grateful for that.”

Patekar, meanwhile, used yesterday’s session to offer up a string of Hindi gags to howls of laughter.

As the questions turned to age and its effect on movie-industry professionals, Kapoor, who is 57, said there were more important things to worry about.

“I’m not delusional about myself. I know how old I am,” he said. “What I feel is that what keeps an actor and a human being going is that you should just enjoy yourself.

“Enjoy your life and enjoy your work. What keeps me going is that I love my work, and I always have the audience in mind.

“They may be sitting in some corner in some small village and they’ve paid money and bought a ticket and expect something from the film, and from me.

“I always have them in mind. No matter what happens, from when I started my career about 39 years ago till today, I should give my best no matter what happens.

“There might be a problem at home, I might be depressed, some calamity, some problem. My audience doesn’t know that. When I’m in front of the camera, I forget everything and I give it my best.”

Welcome Back is slated for release in cinemas next year.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.

Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.

Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.

“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.

Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.

From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.

Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.

BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.

Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.

Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.

“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.

“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.

“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”

The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”
