DUBAI // When two students tried to prevent a gang from attacking a pensioner they stabbed them and hit them with a rock, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Monday.
Both of the men fainted and had to undergo life-saving surgery after the brutal attack.
Indian O K, 20, and three others were seen by the two Indian victims assaulting the elderly man on September 27, the court was told.
“My friend and I tried to help the old man from being assaulted,” said one of the victims A G, 23. “O K and his friends started beating both of us, punching and kicking us all over our bodies before one of them grabbed a large rock and hit me repeatedly with it on the head. Then another stabbed me in my back and side and I fainted.”
The other victim S P, 23, said two of the gang assaulted his friend and two assaulted him.
“I saw the two as they stabbed me with knives in several places. I bled heavily, then fainted,” S P said.
When police arrived, the two victims were in a critical condition.
“They were in a very bad condition. A G could barely speak,” said police officer, H H.
The two were taken to hospital where doctors performed emergency surgery.
O K denied a charge of attempted murder and claimed he saw the two students fighting and assaulting each other with knives.
“I interfered to stop them. I didn’t try to kill them,” he said.
One of the gang remains at large, while the two others have been referred to the Juvenile Court.
All three were drunk at the time of the incident and after they attempted to kill the students, they robbed them, the prosecution alleged.
O K also blamed the man at large for the stabbing.
The next hearing was set for February 3.

Sheer grandeur
The Owo building is 14 storeys high, seven of which are below ground, with the 30,000 square feet of amenities located subterranean, including a 16-seat private cinema, seven lounges, a gym, games room, treatment suites and bicycle storage.
A clear distinction between the residences and the Raffles hotel with the amenities operated separately.
