A driver will spend three years in prison for possessing more than 16kg of amphetamine tablets for sale.
The 28-year-old Syrian told the court he did not know the tablets he was storing in his home were drugs.
"I didn't know it was drugs, my flatmate's friend came to the house and asked if he can leave his bag with us for a while, I thought he had arranged with my flatmate since he is his friend not mine, and i didn't object," said the defendant.
He said he only found out they were amphetamines after being arrested on June 30.

An Emirati police lieutenant from Dubai drug control said they arrested the defendant in a park near Al Rigga after receiving a tip-off.
"He was carrying a large bag, which when we opened, contained two large plastic bags with thousands of tablets in them," said the officer.
The defendant allegedly told officers he received the tablets from a man he didn't know based on directions from another man abroad to smuggle the drugs to Saudi Arabia in return for Dh20,000.
"He provided us with a name and a picture of the man who gave him directions then when we checked the system, we found that this man, also Syrian, is charged with drug trafficking but had been on the run for a few years," said the officer.
Dubai Criminal Court convicted the man with possessing 92,786 Amphetamine tablets weighing 16.8 Kg to sell.
He was fined Dh50,000 and will be deported after serving his prison sentence.

• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
