About one in five motorcycle delivery drivers have been in an accident in the past year.
A majority of delivery drivers also said cars often cut in front of them, fail to indicate and are frequently inconsiderate.
Only half said they believed customers were concerned about their safety.
These were the findings of a major survey conducted by RoadSafetyUAE.
It looked at five areas: the behaviour of other motorists; their own behaviour; perception of customers; bike safety; and training.
Seventy-eight per cent of delivery drivers said cars and other vehicles often don't indicate so it is difficult to anticipate their moves. While 77 per cent said cars and other vehicles often cut in front of them, 68 per cent said other vehicles didn't seem to see them clearly on the roads.
It also found that 56 per cent said that fellow motorcycle delivery riders sometimes endanger them.
“Motorcycle riders are among the most vulnerable road users and hence it is important to understand their perceptions and fears in order to work on improvement potentials," said Thomas Edelmann, managing director of RoadSafetyUAE.
According to the survey, 92 per cent of delivery drivers believe they are safe drivers , while 19 per cent had been in an accident within the last 12 months.
"There is just no steel around them to protect them and we see a growing number of motorcycle delivery riders on UAE’s roads. We want to raise awareness for this topic via this pioneering delivery rider perception survey," Mr Edelmann said.
“We found the riders' perceptions quite shocking as they state that only 51 per cent think customers are concerned about our safety. The riders’ awareness for safe conduct among themselves must be raised, as 56 per cent state that 'sometimes other motorcycle delivery riders ride recklessly and endanger me’," he said.
Four prominent UAE motorcycle fleets participated in the survey and a total of 222 riders populated the questionnaires to date.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
