ABU DHABI // A man who inserted 69 capsules of heroin into his rectum in a bid to smuggle them into the country was yesterday sentenced to death.
The Pakistani man was stopped by customs officials earlier this year attempting to enter the country at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
A source at the Criminal Court said customs officials became suspicious after noticing his "extreme discomfort" and decided to strip search him.
They found 616 grams of heroin in the form of 69 capsules. The man's lawyer claimed he was aware he was smuggling something illegal, but was unaware the capsules contained heroin.
Under UAE law, all death sentences must be appealed.
