A 42-year-old construction worker is accused of setting fire to a building on site and risking the lives of others in protest at working conditions after a colleague died, heard Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday.
Prosecutors said that on May 18, the Indian defendant was among a number of labourers who started the fire in a warehouse in an under-construction development in Dubai.
His colleague had died that morning and the defendant allegedly started encouraging his colleagues to protest.
"After the worker died due to natural causes, everything went well, and we reported the death to the police, so we can arrange to send the dead body home," said a Sudanese representative of the construction company.
"A few hours later, the defendant started talking to other workers and inciting them to protest."
He added that the defendant and the other workers set fire to a warehouse then damaged a number of villas in the development.
"They also damaged a number of the company's vehicles and other equipment," said the representative, who called police.
Riot police arrived and got the angry workers under control before arresting the defendant.
"We received a report of the incident and, when we headed there, other workers said that the defendant was behind what happened," said an Emirati policeman, 37.
Dh12.6 million in damages was caused by the workers, records show.
In court on Sunday morning, the Indian denied charges of staring fire, risking lives and causing damage.
A verdict in expected on October 29.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
