DUBAI // Two men kidnapped a carpenter and stole Dh3,000 from him, a court heard today.
NM, 45, and MA, 34, both from Pakistan, drove up alongside the carpenter MM, 22, from Bangladesh and identified themselves as CID officers, before asking him to get into their car.
But when he asked for ID they bundled him inside before driving off, stealing his money and abandoning him in Jebel Ali.
Prosecutors told the Criminal Court the incident took place on February 8 this year.
"I was walking to the supermarket next to my residence when one man approached me saying he was police and ordered me to get into the car with him," recalled the carpenter.
One of them flashed an ID card briefly, but he could not see it clearly.
"He slapped me on the face then his accomplice stepped out of the car and both men grabbed me and shoved me into their car," said the carpenter.
The men stole Dh3,000, some foreign currency bills and two mobile phones before taking him to Jebel Ali and abandoning him.
"They just gave me some of my ID cards from my wallet then let me go. When they drove away, I memorised their car's licence plate number," said the carpenter.
He walked to a nearby building and sought the help of a security guard.
Police traced the two men through the licence plate number, which belonged to a rented car. When they were arrested, police found 12 stolen mobiles in their possession.
The pair denied charges of kidnap and robbery. "We are asking him to lend us the money," they said.
A verdict is expected on May 29.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
