DUBAI // A woman is charged with running a brothel, exploiting a juvenile in prostitution and having sex with a man outside marriage, a court heard this morning.
The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance was told the housewife SM, 48, an Emirati, ran a brothel in the Mutaina area between May 2010 and May 10, 2011, when she was arrested.
She denied the charges in court today, saying: "I did not do this, your honour; I own the apartment but it's rented to a Syrian man. I am a mother and have been in detention for six months. Please grant me bail, your honour."
A housemaid, FM, 23, Ethiopian, is charged with practicing prostitution while another maid, SY, Filipina, 45, is charged with criminal complicity by helping SM run the brothel. Prosecutors said she arranged customers' visits and handled payments.
A Syrian accountant, TS, 60, is also charged with criminal complicity for facilitating prostitution and providing SM women to work in the sex industry.
FM, SY and TS denied the charges.
AA, 33, an Iranian visitor, is facing charges of having sex outside wedlock with SM.
Prosecutors said SM exploited an underage girl who she had working in prostitution, taking all the money she earned. The girl was referred to Juvenile Court on charges of having consensual sex with several men.
Records show that the girl confessed to the charges. She told prosecutors that on May 10, she was arrested in the brothel naked as she arrived to have sex with a customer.
A verdict is expected on October 27.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
