Dubai // Five teenagers convicted of murdering a teenaged boy during a street brawl in March had their sentences upheld by the Dubai Court of Appeal yesterday.
The juveniles stabbed Ali Mohammed Hassan, a 13-year-old Emirati, a dozen times, and left him on the pavement to die.
In July, the Juvenile Court Judge Omar Karmastagy sentenced H A, 16, to serve 10 years in a juvenile detention centre while his co-defendant, A M, 17, was sentenced to serve five years.
H A received the harshest sentence under UAE law for his crime.
H A and A M were both convicted of premeditated murder.
Their accomplices, A A, 15, S H, 14 and A H, 15, were referred to a juvenile reform centre for aiding and abetting the crime.
They have also been placed under probation until they reach adulthood.
The three boys placed under judicial probation will be told where they may and may not go, where they can and cannot work, and will be subjected to rehabilitation through educational programmes, according to the court's judgment.
Prosecution records show H A acted in a premeditated fashion when he stabbed Ali in front of his house as A M urged him on. The two were also convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to the victim's brother and his friend after assaulting them.
The defendants A A, S H and A H were convicted of conspiring and enticing H A and A M into murdering the victim and assaulting his brother and his friend.
A H, according to prosecutors, presented the knife to H A while S H carried a wooden plank that was used in the assault.
The police report, which was filed on the night of the murder, says an officer heard a scream outside his house and found Ali lying in a pool of his own blood. He rushed the boy, who was still alive, to Rashid Hospital. The boy later died from his injuries.
Ali had 12 stab wounds - three in the left side of his back, three in the left shoulder, three in the left side of his chest, two in his stomach and one in his upper chest.
