More than Dubai 100 prisoners have been freed from debt as part of a humanitarian initiative launched by the emirate's court authority. Dubai Courts helped to wipe out Dh21 million owed by 107 inmates serving time for financial crimes. The campaign, called Help Has Come, involved generous community members donating cash in order to give the selected prisoners a clean slate once they are released. A committee was set up to assess the financial situations faced by the beneficiaries before the payments were approved. It is the second such scheme led by the government body to support rehabilitation efforts. “The first initiative - Courts Of Good - helped pay off Dh13m in debts of 133 inmates,” said Taresh Eid Al Mansouri, director-general of Dubai Courts. "It contributes to spreading the culture of donation among all community groups.” A ceremony was held last week to recognise the generosity of those who funded the scheme.
