A man who verbally assaulted cleaning staff at a residence on the Palm Jumeirah turned violent and tried to choke a police officer called to the scene, a court heard
The Egyptian, 42, was reported to the police for verbally abusing cleaners at the Tiara Residence on May 5.
As the police tried to get the man to a patrol car, he struck one of the officers and tried to choke him, Dubai Court was told.
“It was 10am when we arrived and were briefed about the man assaulting others,” said the Emirati policeman, 24.
The accused was found walking outside the building with a cup of coffee in his hand during Ramadan.
“My colleague and I approached him and asked him to come to the police station, but he ignored our request and offered us some coffee,” said the officer.
The officers escorted him to the police car that was parked in the basement.
“While in the lift, the accused hit me and tried to choke me. When the lift opened, he fell on me,” said the policeman.
The Egyptian was charged with assaulting a police officer and eating publicly during Ramadan.
He has denied the charges and the next hearing is on October 27.
